Is it now more advantageous for households to fix gas prices or will prices fall?

Je nyní výhodnější pro domácnosti zafixovat ceny plynu nebo ceny budou klesat?
Je nyní výhodnější pro domácnosti zafixovat ceny plynu nebo ceny budou klesat?

This is a very good question and depends on several factors that affect the price of gas. In July 2025, the energy market situation is relatively stabilized compared to the extremes of 2021-2023, but several key factors may affect the price of gas in the future.

🔍 What affects gas prices:

  1. Gas reserves in the EU and the level of storage – currently, storage facilities in Europe are relatively well filled.

  2. Consumption (e.g. by winter) – a mild winter usually reduces consumption and thus puts upward pressure on prices.

  3. Geopolitics – e.g. tensions in the Middle East or problems with LNG transportation – may push prices up again.

  4. Emission allowance prices and overall EU energy policy .

  5. The exchange rate of the crown against the euro and the dollar , because gas is mainly traded in euros or dollars.

📈 Current trend (summer 2025):

  • Gas prices on wholesale markets have returned closer to normal (compared to the crisis years).

  • Some suppliers (in the Czech Republic, e.g. ČEZ, E.ON, innogy) have already reduced the price of fixed products , and some even offer annual fixed rates at prices below the current spot tariff .

  • But long-term fixations (e.g. for 2-3 years) are still a bit more expensive - because suppliers keep a reserve in case of price increases.

🤔 Does it make sense to fix it now? Possible scenarios:

Situation

What to do

🔵 Do you currently have an expensive contract tariff (e.g. from last year)?

Yes, switch to a new pen – you will almost certainly save money

🟢 Are you on a spot tariff and monitoring prices?

Don't fix yet , but be on the lookout - as winter approaches, if you hear from the forecast that it will be a bad winter, prices will start to rise, in which case consider fixing

🟠 Do you want certainty and don't have time to monitor the market?

A 1-year fix at a good price may make sense

🔴 Fixation for 2–3 years

We don't recommend it now - the outlook is uncertain and you may pay more than necessary.

Recommendations (July 2025):

  • If someone offers you a 1-year fix at a price close to the spot price (or lower) , it might be a good move .

  • If you have a spot tariff and are satisfied , you can wait a while longer - the turn of August/September will be decisive.

  • Keep an eye on large suppliers, they sometimes offer limited-time promotions with fixation under interesting conditions .

Prices and conditions of different suppliers can vary significantly. For example, we asked Pražská Plynárenská as what their offer is and found out the following:

📌 The most advantageous fixed tariffs from PPAS (from 1. 2. 2025)

  • Fixation for 1, 2 or 3 years

  • Three-year tariff: 999 CZK/MWh (excl. VAT) for natural gas

  • New clients will receive a bonus of 1,500–3,000 CZK upon switching

  • For example, a family house with an annual consumption of 23 MWh: savings of up to 8,933 CZK/year compared to the standard price list

⚙️ Non-fixed tariffs

  • Since January 1, 2025, PPAS has reduced spot gas prices for the fifth time – on average by ~5.5%

  • This means that if you are already on a spot plan, this may seem like an extremely good deal.

🧭 When and what to vote for?

Situation

Recommendation

You are on an old, expensive plan

Switch to fixed (1–3 years) – significant savings and security

You are on a spot tariff

You can wait a while – the spot price is cheap. But if winter or geopolitical risk is approaching, consider fixing for 1 year

You want certainty and don't want to follow the market

1-year fixation is a compromise between price and stability

Are you considering a long-term fix (2-3 years)?

The three-year tariff is advantageous (999 CZK/MWh) and comes with a bonus – potential savings of ~9,000 CZK per year – suitable if you want long-term security

Conclusion

  • A 3-year fixation (999 CZK/MWh + bonus) is worth it if you are looking for peace and stability.

  • One-year fixes are good if you want protection but don't want to commit for a long time.

  • Spot prices are now low thanks to the latest PPAS cuts, which is beneficial for patient households.

What exactly are spot prices?

Spot prices (sometimes also called market or current prices ) mean that the price of gas you pay changes each month according to the prices on the exchange . It is not fixed in advance as with a fix.

🔍 Spot tariff – what does it mean:

  • Every month you pay a price for gas based on the current price on the wholesale market (usually according to the TTF exchange in the Netherlands).

  • The supplier adds a small surcharge to this (e.g. 100–300 CZK/MWh).

  • Prices can fall or rise – depending on weather, geopolitics, gas reserves, etc.

📊 Advantages of the spot tariff:

✅ When market prices are low (like now), you will save more than with a fix

You have no 1-3 year commitment – you can switch to another plan at any time

Transparency – you know what the price consists of

⚠️ Disadvantages of the spot tariff:

❌ Stock market prices rise quickly (due to frost or war): you immediately pay more

Uncertainty – you can't accurately plan your annual expenses

❌ Sometimes you may be "surprised" by a higher bill (e.g. in winter)

🧪 Example:

  • June 2025 : spot price was €25/MWh → that's about CZK 625/MWh excluding VAT

  • Supplier surcharge (e.g. 150 CZK/MWh) → resulting price: 775 CZK/MWh

  • A fixed tariff, on the other hand, may be 950–999 CZK/MWh.

💡 Summary:

  • A spot tariff is like "going on vacation" - great when the market is calm.

  • Fixation is like "insurance" - you pay a little more to avoid being surprised by fluctuations.
